How to Add and Subcategorize Products in Your Product Settings

How to Add and Subcategorize Products in Your Point of Sale

Step 1: Navigate to Products

Start by going into Settings, then select Rules, Products, and Sales. From there, click into Products.

If you want to subcategorize items you already have in your system, you can do that under Product Types. (If you haven’t set up your product types and categories yet, check out our Product Types and categories article.)

Once you’re in the Products section, you’ll be able to see all of the product types and categories you’ve already created.

Step 2: Create a New Product

To add a new product, click Create Product.

For example, let’s say we’re adding candy to our inventory. After selecting the category, you’ll choose a subcategory — in this case, Lollipops.

From here, you can:

  • Add an image of the product
  • Name the product — you can keep it simple (e.g., “Lollipops”), or if you’ve created subcategories, you can get more specific (e.g., naming individual lollipop flavors)
  • Add a description, if you’d like

Step 3: Set Pricing and Product Details

Next, fill in the key details for your product:

  • Price — for example, 50 cents for a lollipop
  • Taxes — apply any applicable taxes
  • SKU or UPC barcode — if available at your campground

Step 4: Track Inventory

If you want to track stock levels, enter how many units you have available. This matters because campground employees won’t be able to sell past the stock amount you enter.

For example, if you enter 20 lollipops in stock, employees can sell up to that number — and no more — until the stock is updated.

You can also decide:

  • Whether the item is non-refundable
  • Whether it’s a product add-on (something campers can add while making a reservation) or a standalone product (available for purchase only at the campground)

In our lollipop example, we’ll keep it as a standalone product available for purchase directly at the campground.

Once everything is filled in, click Create Product. You’ll now see it listed — “Lollipops,” with a stock count of 20.

Step 5: Editing and Restocking Products

Need to make changes later? Just go into the action bar next to the product to edit or remove details as needed.

Running low or out of stock? If your stock hits zero, the system won’t allow any further purchases — even if you actually have more product on hand but haven’t updated the count yet.

Here’s a common scenario: your campground employee tells you they can’t complete a sale because the system shows zero in stock, but you know you’ve restocked. To fix this:

  1. Go back into Products
  2. Click Edit Product on the item
  3. Update the stock count
  4. Click Save Product

The updated stock will appear immediately, and your employee will be able to process the sale.

Important: You need to consistently update your stock counts. If the system shows zero, it will block all purchases of that item — regardless of what’s actually available at the campground.
